DESCRIPTION:This is part of a four-part series on the third Thursday monthly at 3pm from September through December\, 2022. \nObjectives: Explore how compassion for others and for ourselves can support our well-being through an exploration of research and practices. \nContent: Revisit our neurobiological response to threats and stress through the lens of self-compassion as a way of disrupting our fight\, flight\, and freeze response with self-kindness\, common humanity\, and mindful awareness. Explore the differences between empathy and compassion and how the pro-social emotion of compassion is generative towards our well-being. Look at how mirror neurons operate and amplify emotions around us with a focus on how calm is just as contagious as fear and anxiety. \nTake Away: Getting stuck in the experience of empathy while engaging in critical work of providing care for people and their families experiencing health challenges can lead to burnout. DESCRIPTION:This is part of a four-part series on the third Thursday monthly at 3pm from September through December\, 2022. \nObjectives: Look at the impacts of uncertainty on our well-being\, especially in a COVID and post-COVID era. Examine the shift in impacts of stress on our well-being through exploring both acute and chronic stressors in our environment. Explore the concept of radical acceptance as developed in dialectical behavioral therapy. \nContent: Look at models of post disaster recovery and emotional well-being. Normalize the challenges we have experienced over the last year and will experience in the coming years through validating emotional responses and considering the impacts of anniversary reactions and on-going disruptions. Discuss research on the differences between acute and chronic stress. Explore one’s agency or control in times of chronic and acute stress to leverage radical acceptance of the challenging situations we find ourselves in during our careers and lives. \nTake Away: Chronic and acute stress impacts our well-being in terms of our mental\, physical\, and social health. Focusing on the agency and control we have in difficult situations allows us to accept reality\, take action where we can\, and to stay hopeful for the future. \n\n\n\nRegister

Despite best intentions\, making this happen can sometimes be challenging. In this workshop\, part of our four-part leadership development series for all School of Medicine faculty\, we will focus on a framework for leading and engaging teams in more effective ways. SUMMARY:CLIME Work in Progress: Black/African Americans Residents' Experience of Racial Affinity Groups in a Pediatric Training Program
DESCRIPTION:Prior literature has shown that experiences of racism are pervasive in the professional lives of trainees who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM)\, particularly Black and African American trainees\, often leading to professional dissatisfaction\, feelings of disengagement\, and unplanned changes in career trajectories. Understanding the unique experiences of Black and African American trainees is crucial to fostering an antiracist learning environment. In recent years\, residency programs have introduced racial affinity groups as a tool to explore racism in their curricula and institutions\, support community-building\, and promote an inclusive\, antiracist learning environment. With this intervention\, it is important to understand the experiences of Black and African American residents in racial affinity groups. The aim of this project is to describe and understand the lived experience of Black and African American pediatric residents in racial affinity groups. This work may inform future use of racial affinity groups in residency training by providing a deeper understanding of Black and African American residents’ experiences with them. \n\n\n\nRegister

This session will focus on reliably and accurately assessing learners in the clinical setting – the session directly links with the prior session on formative feedback\, as much of this assessment information can be provided directly back to learners as feedback. Clinical teachers are also often required to create written assessments to help course directors to evaluate learners and provide a grade. This is a challenging task and is highly susceptible to bias – this session will provide best practices in mitigating bias in assessment. \n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:CLIME Work in Progress: Exploring the role of specialty identity in medical student professional identity formation: a qualitative analysis
DESCRIPTION:Medical student professional identity formation (PIF) is impacted by aspects of the clinical working environment. Our recent work highlights how group identity according to specialty\, or specialty identity\, impacts how physicians engage with each other. Similarly\, the tenets of sociocultural learning theory suggest that it is critical for trainees to work in a group with others pursuing the same goals\, as part of a community of practice. However\, group alliance also fosters boundaries between groups. In fact\, our recent work demonstrated how biases and stereotypes directed at other specialties were signaled throughout training and promoted conflict. While we are beginning to understand how specialty identity impacts practicing physicians\, there remains a gap in our understanding of how this type of identity forms early in training. Thus\, we propose a qualitative study which will explore how medical students develop and understand their specialty identity as it begins to form. We will interview students using inductive techniques and analyze transcripts using a constructivist grounded theory approach. We hope that an improved understanding of how specialty identity impacts the PIF will provide educators with the tools to promote healthy communities of practice and limit the negative consequences of group alliance. \n\n\n\nRegister
