Healthcare Finance 101 – Understanding How We Get Paid

Matt Lund (Chief Contracting Officer, UW Medicine) and Michael Myint (Associate Professor of Medicine; Chief Population Health Officer, UW Medicine) will review what wasn’t taught in medical school about how the healthcare financing system in the US operates today, how we are paid at UW Medicine by insurers, and how the market is changing rapidly.
Learning objectives
-Understand the ways that UW Medicine is currently paid in fee-for-service and in fee-for-value models.
-Understand key terms and how they are derived including wRVU, DRG, Evaluation and Management (E and E) coding, and concepts around risk-adjustment.
-Understand changes in the marketplace and strategies integrated healthcare systems such as UW Medicine have in place to thrive in an uncertain healthcare environment.

Healthcare Finance 301: Who Could We Be and How Would We Get There?

In this interactive event, attendees will discuss where we can go from here at UW Medicine, examining the competitive landscape of other healthcare organizations, pharmacy 340b, and other cases for discussion.

This workshop covers finance models blending value-based care with fee-for-service. Learn about what we do today, plus how disintermediation of insurance companies, bundle payments, and site of service work in a blended model.

1. Understand the right profile for UW Medicine in blending Fee-For-Service (FFS) and Value-Based-Care (VBC)
2. Understand the considerations in managing and maintaining FFS and VBC contracts
3. Understand what we need to do to succeed in these models, and what you can do as a clinician
